Sunday, March 2, 2008-The Fourth Sunday of Lent:  Sisters and brothers, our Lenten journey through the desert of repentance continues.  Today we marvel at the healing power of the Lord, who cures the man who had been born blind.  As this Mass begins, let us be aware of all that is in need of healing in our own lives, in this community, and in our world.  Let us also pray for those preparing for baptism as they celebrate the second scrutiny.  Let us ask the Lord Jesus to call them-and all of us-out of darkness and into his own wonderful light.

CALL FOR QUILTERS-the quilters will gather once again in the Church Hall on Tuesday, March 4 at 10:00 A.M.

The St. Francis daily Mass schedule for the Wednesdays of Lent is 5:30 P.M. followed by a soup supper in the parish hall.  The Religious Education classes will conduct the Stations of the Cross at 6:45 P.M. prior to their regular class time of 7:00 P.M.

St. Francis Choir Members (and new voices):  The choir continues their preparations for Holy Week and Easter following CCD-so about 8:15 P.M. in the choir loft.  All are welcome to join in the praise of God and sing!

Lenten Ecumenical Prayer Breakfast will be hosted this Wednesday morning at 7:00 A.M. by St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.  The theme for the season is based upon the article of the Creed:  Jesus Christ, his only son.  Our parish’s prayer will center around the Ascension of the Lord.  Please come and join us!  The United Methodist will host the final breakfast next Wednesday, March 12.

The Ladies Altar Society will meet this Sunday following the 9:00 A.M. Mass in the parish hall.

A word of thanks to all who prepared the soup supper for last Wednesday night.  The soup was delicious and the fellowship in the parish hall was wonderful.  Not only were there sandwiches-the guys cut the deserts in such dimensions as to satisfy every kid’s heart.  Again thanks-and a word of invitation to all-come join us!

Holy Week Schedule:

Palm Sunday:  5:30 PM (Saturday), 9:00AM, 10:30AM-Mass at North Central Correctional Facility

Chrism Mass:  Cathedral of the Epiphany, Sioux City

Holy Thursday:  7:00PM-Mass of the Lord’s Supper

Good Friday:  12:05PM-Stations of the Cross, 7:00PM-Celebration of the Lord’s Passion

                Holy Saturday:  7:00PM-Easter Vigil

                Easter Sunday:  9:00AM-Easter Mass

10:30AM-Easter Mass at North Central Correctional Facility

This schedule was discussed at the most recent parish council meeting.  It was generally thought that many folks working outside the home might be better accommodated by having the celebrations at 7:00PM.  The only real variation from past years is that the Good Friday celebration of the Lord’s Passions is moved from mid-day to the evening.  You will note, however, that the Stations of the Cross will be prayed at 12:05PM as a way of marking this period of the day commemorating the Lord’s passage to Calvary.  The Stations will take about 30 minutes, but the liturgical norms do NOT permit the distribution of Holy Communion at the mid-day service.  Given the 7:00PM hour, those parishioners who do not drive after sunset are welcome to call the rectory at 297-8263.

The United Family Knights of Columbus is having a drawing for one of four quarters of beef.  The proceeds will be divided between the EMT”s of Churdan, Lohrville, Lake City and Rockwell City.  Tickets are one for $10.00 and three for $20.00 available from member Knights.  Drawing will be March 13th.  Thank your for your support of this effort.  If interested you can call Paul Stumpf, the United Family Council Financial Secretary at 464-8111.

“The World Day of Prayer” by Church Women United will be held March 7 at 9:30AM at the Church of Christ.

Mike Villhauer Benefit Chili Supper and Silent Auction will be held on Saturday, March 8th from 5:00 P.M.-8:00P.M. at the Rockwell City Park Community Building.  Mike is unable to work due to injuries from a January 29th vehicle accident.  Drop donation or auction items off at Draperies Plus in Rockwell City or Heritage Bank in Lytton.  For more information contact Bill Lawson at 297-5417.

St. Columbkille Church in Varina will be hosting their annual fish fry on Friday, March 7 from 4:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M.  Cost for the dinner will be $7.00 for adults and $4.50 for children 11 and under.

Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church’s Annual St. Patrick’s Celebration will be held on Sunday, March 9 at Holstein Vet’s Hall.  They will be serving Irish stew from 5:00 P.M.-7:00 P.M. and a nationally known 3 man Irish band will play.

Early Childhood Screening and Pre-school Registration will be held on Monday, March 31 from 2:00 P.M.-6:00 P.M. at the Rockwell City-Lytton Elementary School.  Open to children of surrounding areas.  Not open for students who are already attending early learning program or Head Start.  The screening is free.  For an appointment call 297-8621.
