Sunday, March 16, 2006-Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion:  Brothers and sisters in Christ, our Lenten journey of repentance has led us to the holy city of Jerusalem.  With the crowds who followed Jesus and acclaimed him as their Messiah we raise our palm branches and join in festive song.  We then follow Jesus along the way of the cross as we share in his passion and death.  Let us begin this solemn liturgy with hearts open to the saving work God will accomplish in this holy place as we begin this holiest of weeks.

St. Francis Choir Members (and new voices):  The choir continues their preparations for Holy Week and Easter following CCD-so about 8:15 in the choir loft.  All are welcome to join in the praise of God in song!

A word of thanks to all who prepared the soup supper last Wednesday night.  Again thanks-and a word of invitation to all-come join us.

In your charity, please pray for the peaceful repose of the soul of Fr. Tim Fitzgerald who died this past week.  Fr. Fitzgerald was buried from Sacred Heart Church, Boone, Iowa.

Chrism Mass:  Many thanks to Cheryl and Merle Wuebker for volunteering to participate in the Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City on March 17 at 1:00 P.M.  They will receive the Sacred Oils for St. Francis of Assisi parish.  These Sacred Oils are used in the administration of Baptism, Confirmation, and Anointing of the Sick at the parochial level.  The Sacred Chrism is also used in the administration of Holy Orders, but this sacrament generally is celebrated at the Cathedral church.

Almsgiving:  Holy week offers a couple of opportunities to assist with collections for Special Needs.  On Good Friday a collection will be taken up to assist the works of the Commissariat for the Shrines in the Holy Land (a fancy way of saying-the work of the Franciscan Friars who attend to the Holy Land Shrines).  On Easter, you might choose to assist with the retirement fund for Religious.  The National Religious Retirement Fund administers these monies.  Religious Orders requiring financial assistance to meet retirement needs apply annually to this fund for supplemental grants.  Needs are assessed annually from across Religious Orders in all 50 states.  Please see Bishop Nickless’ letter in March 20th edition of The Globe.

Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Fonda will have their annual Turkey Supper on Sunday, March 30, 2008 from 4:00 P.M.-7:00 P.M. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Main Street Fonda.  Menu includes turkey and all the trimmings with homemade pies.  Tickets will be $6.50 for adults, children age 5-12 $3.00 and children under 5 are free.
