Sunday, June 22, 2008-The Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time:  Sisters and brothers in Christ, we are gathered together to experience the presence of the Lord in word and sacrament.  The prophet Jeremiah reminds us today to sing our praises to the Lord, for the Lord has rescued the life of the poor.  As we are nourished for the work of justice at the table of the Eucharist, let us remember the poor who still cry out to the Lord in their need.

Farewell for Msgr. McCoy:  St. Francis of Assisi parish will host a farewell breakfast on July 13 following the 9:00 A.M. Mass.  A full breakfast will be offered-watch next week’s bulletin for details.

Altar Society:  Once again it’s time for election of officers.  Please become involved.  If you are willing to have your name placed on the ballot for Vice President, Secretary or Treasurer, please contact Hat Gidel at 297-7495 or Cathy Lensing at 297-7246.

PNAC Reunion:  It was a small crowd of Pontifical North American College (PNAC) alumni who gathered in Chicago this past week, but it was a pleasant reunion.  I am most gratified to have been recognized by my alma mater with the alumni award, the Founder’s Medal.

Tabernacle:  Just in case you missed this news in last week’s bulletin; I took the tabernacle and a few of the sacred vessels to Omaha for refurbishing.  This ecclesiastical metal works will require 4 to 6 weeks to complete the cleaning and repair.  This project is being underwritten in part by the Altar Society and a memorial gift.

Next weekend-June 28/29:  The feast of Ss. Peter and Paul marks the annual Peter’s Pence collection.  This annual collection aids the Holy Father in serving the needs of the poorest victims of natural disasters and violence across the globe.  His charitable outreach is a concrete expression of hope for those in most need.  Your generous support of this collection ensures many will know “Christ our Hope.”  Thanks for considering this appeal in your charitable giving.

Ordination to Priesthood:  Two deacons, Rev. Mr. Shane Deman and Rev. Mr. Jeremy Wind, will be ordained to the priesthood of Jesus Christ on Saturday, June 28th at the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City.  Deacon Shane hails from Sioux City, St. Michael parish on the city’s north side.  Deacon Jeremy was raised in Jefferson, St. Joseph parish.  Deacon Jeremy did his seminary formation in St. Meinrad, IN; Deacon Shane did his formation in Rome at the Pontifical North American College.  Deacon Shane has invited me to preach at his Mass of Thanksgiving on Sunday, June 29th.  To accommodate his request, Rev. Richard Remmes, who resides in Arcadia will celebrate the weekend Masses on June 28 and 28 here at St. Francis.  Please welcome Fr. Remmes to St. Francis; and please pray for Deacons Shane and Jeremy as they begin their priestly life.

Absent from the parish:  I will be away from the parish from June 30 to July 9.  I will be traveling to Rome with another board member of the National Museum of Funeral History to finalize the remaining materials to mount the exhibit, “Lives and Deaths of the Popes.”  Fr. Roque D’Sousa will celebrate the parish masses on July 5 and 6.  Fr. Rogue is presently chaplain at the Marian Home in Fort Dodge, while on sabbatical from his studies in Boston.  Should you need a priest, please call Fr. Ries at St. Thomas, Manson, 712-469-3743.
