Sunday, February 24, 2008-The Third Sunday of Lent:  Sisters and brothers, today the Church draws us to the Lord Jesus, the wellspring of living water.  And today throughout the world the Church celebrates the first scrutiny with those who are preparing for baptism at Easter.  A scrutiny is a special rite that uncovers and heals all that is sinful, and brings out and strengthens all that is good.  All of us, whether we are preparing for baptism or have been a baptized Catholic for many years, are in need of healing and reconciliation.  Like the Samaritan woman at the well, we thirst for the life-giving waters that only our Lord Jesus can provide.

CALL FOR QUILTERS-the quilters will gather once again in the Church Hall on Tuesday, February 26 at 10:00 A.M. to continue their projects.  All are welcome to join in the fun.  The quilters plan to meet weekly at 10:00 A.M. through the winter months.  If you have questions, please contact Carolyn Richardson at 297-7028.

The St. Francis daily Mass schedule for the Wednesdays of Lent is 5:30 P.M. followed by a soup supper in the parish hall.  The Religious Education classes will conduct the Stations of the Cross at 6:45 P.M. prior to their regular class time of 7:00 P.M.  Please consider making Wednesday Mass one of your Lenten practices.  Parents are encouraged to join their children for the praying of the Stations of the Cross at 6:45.  All are most welcome and encouraged to participate.

St. Francis Choir Members (and new voices):  The choir began their preparations for Holy Week and Easter and they will meet Wednesday, February 27 following CCD-so about 8:15 P.M. in the choir loft.  All are most welcomed and encouraged to participate.

Lenten Ecumenical Prayer Breakfasts will be celebrated at the various churches serving Rockwell City on Wednesday mornings at 7:00 A.M.  The next breakfast will be Wednesday, February 27, at Immanuel Lutheran.  The theme for the season will center around the second article of the Apostles’ Creed:  Jesus Christ, his only Son.  Subsequent breakfasts and host:  March 5-St. Francis; March 12-United Methodist.

Eucharistic Congress-Quebec City, Canada:  If you are interested in joining the diocesan pilgrimage, please see the information at the entrances of the Church.  Fr. LeRoy Seuntjens will lead the pilgrimage in June 2008.  Registration deadline is March 1.

The Ladies Altar Society will meet next Sunday following the 9:00 A.M. Mass in the parish hall.  Some discussion of the food service for the Ecumenical Breakfast on March 5 will take place.

In your Christian charity, please pray for the peaceful repose of Martha M. Doohen, who was buried from St. Francis on Saturday.  Martha is the mother of Carolyn Wuebker.  May the God of all consolation bring peace and comfort to all who mourn.

A word of thanks to all who prepared the soup supper for last Wednesday night.  The soup was delicious and the fellowship in the parish hall was wonderful.  Last Wednesday’s crew even “upped the ante,” so to speak, they had some little sandwiches and cornbread to accompany the soups!  Again thanks-and a word of invitation to all-come join us!

Holy Week Schedule:

Palm Sunday:  5:30 PM (Saturday), 9:00AM, 10:30AM-Mass at North Central Correctional Facility

Chrism Mass:  Cathedral of the Epiphany, Sioux City

Holy Thursday:  7:00PM-Mass of the Lord’s Supper

Good Friday:  12:05PM-Stations of the Cross, 7:00PM-Celebration of the Lord’s Passion

                Holy Saturday:  7:00PM-Easter Vigil

                Easter Sunday:  9:00AM-Easter Mass

10:30AM-Easter Mass at North Central Correctional Facility

This schedule was discussed at the most recent parish council meeting.  It was generally thought that many folks working outside the home might be better accommodated by having the celebrations at 7:00PM.  The only real variation from past years is that the Good Friday celebration of the Lord’s Passions is moved from mid-day to the evening.  You will note, however, that the Stations of the Cross will be prayed at 12:05PM as a way of marking this period of the day commemorating the Lord’s passage to Calvary.  The Stations will take about 30 minutes, but the liturgical norms do NOT permit the distribution of Holy Communion at the mid-day service.  Given the 7:00PM hour, those parishioners who do not drive after sunset are welcome to call the rectory (297-8263) to ask for transportation to and from any or all evening services.  The parish council will devise a plan for arranging proper transport for you.

The United Family Knights of Columbus is having a drawing for one of four quarters of beef.  The proceeds will be divided between the EMT”s of Churdan, Lohrville, Lake City and Rockwell City.  Tickets are one for $10.00 and three for $20.00 available from member Knights.  Drawing will be March 13th.  Thank your for your support of this effort.  If interested you can call Paul Stumpf, the United Family Council Financial Secretary at 464-8111.

“The World Day of Prayer” by Church Women United will be held March 7 at 9:30AM at the Church of Christ.
