Sunday, June 29, 2008-Solenity of St. Peter and St. Paul, Apostles, and its Vigil: Brothers and sisters, today is a special day on the Church’s calendar, the Solemnity of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. The Church holds these men in such high honor that the prayers and readings for their feast day replace the usual Sunday readings. As we celebrate this Mass, let us seek the intercession of Saint Peter, the rock on whom the church is built, and Saint Paul, the apostle to the nations.

The clip boards are still available this weekend in the vestibule of the church. Thank you for helping-more hands, less strain on any one person.
Farewell for Msgr. McCoy: St. Francis of Assisi parish will host a farewell breakfast on July 13 following the 9:00 A.M. Mass. The Holy Name Society is sponsoring a full breakfast which will be prepared by the Boy Scouts. Msgr. McCoy departs for Fort Dodge on July 15. There will be a free will offering for the support of the Boy Scouts.
This weekend-June 28/29: The feast of Ss. Peter and Paul marks the annual Peter’s Pence collection. This annual collection aids the Holy Father in serving the needs of the poorest victims of natural disasters and violence across the globe. Thanks for considering this appeal in your charitable giving.
Ordination to Priesthood: Two deacons, Rev. Mr. Shane Deman and Rev. Mr. Jeremy Wind, were ordained to the priesthood of Jesus Christ on Saturday, June 28th at the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City. This Sunday, June 29, I have the privilege to preach at Father Shane Deman’s Mass of Thanksgiving. Please welcome to St. Francis, Rev. Richard Remmes, who is celebrating the weekend Masses on June 28 and 29. Please pray for Father Shane and Father Jeremy as they begin their priestly life.
Absent from the parish: As noted in last week’s bulletin, I will be away from the parish from June 30 to July 9. I will be traveling to Rome with another board member of the National Museum of Funeral History to finalize the remaining materials to mount the exhibit, “Lives and Deaths of the Popes.” Fr. Roque D’Sousa will celebrate the parish masses on July 5 and 6. Fr. Roque is presently chaplain at the Marian Home in Fort Dodge, while on sabbatical from his studies in Boston. Should you need a priest, please call Fr. Ries at St. Thomas, Manson, 712-469-3743.
New Mass Schedule: Beginning July 19-20, the Mass times for St. Francis, St. Thomas and St. Mary will be as follows: Saturday Vigil Mass-5:30 P.M. St. Thomas, Manson; Sunday-8:00 A.M. St. Thomas, Manson; Sunday-9:30 A.M. St. Francis, Rockwell City and Sunday-11:00 A.M. St. Mary, Pomeroy. The Mass Schedule allows Fr. Ries to provide for the needs of the three parishes.
New Resident: Fr. Clair Boes, who is retiring from active ministry on July 15, will take up residence in the St. Francis rectory on the 15th or shortly thereafter. Fr. Ries will coordinate with Fr. Boes so that he might offer weekday Masses at St. Francis as he is available to do so.
Bishop’s Letters: Attached to this week’s bulletin are two letters from Bishop Nickless. One letter asks for your generous help through a special collection at all of the Masses on July 12-13 for FLOOD RELIEF. The proceeds will be directed to the Archdiocese of Dubuque and to the Diocese of Davenport for flood relief. Attached, also, is an envelope for this purpose. The second letter address the DIOCESAN STRATEGIC PLANNING for the coming year. Please consider both letters carefully. Thank you!
Next weekend: At the Masses on July 5 and 6, the women of the parish will vote for the Altar Society officers. Ballots will be distributed at the Masses.
I would like to say thank you for all the help and the support that I received while I was part of the Religious Education program at St. Francis. Being able to work with wonderful parents, teachers and parishioners was a blessing for me, as well as getting to know the children and young adults that make the church a special place to be. I am also very grateful for being able to help with the Sing & Praise Choir-my prayer for them is that they continue to share their gift of music. I also appreciate and am touched by Msgr. McCoy’s encouragement and effort that he too put into our program and our youth. I know next year will bring new faces and new ideas, and I truly pray that God will bless those who will give of their time and their faith to continue to strengthen the community of St. Francis. May the peace of Jesus be with each of you-Melissa Hindt.
